On December 13th, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Science and Technology Beijing held its inaugural meeting in Room 306 at the main office building. Wu Guilong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the University; Yang Renshu, President of the University; Quan Liangzhu, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the University; and Xie Jianxin, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as leaders of various functional departments and departments related to material sciences of the University attended the meeting. The meeting was presided over by Wu Aixiang, Vice President of the University.
Wu introduced the establishment process of the Department. The Department was established with the strong support of the leaders of the University. The Development Planning Office and the Personnel Office conducted extensive research and organized multiple discussions and communication sessions with relevant departments prior to submitting the application and received approval from the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of the University. In addition, relevant institutions were established, and leaders of corresponding units were appointed. Wu emphasized that the Department is an academic institution, and the administrative tasks of the former secondary units remained unchanged. The key to the establishment of the Department lies in well-organized planning, coordination, and integration.
Quan announced the organizational structure and appointment of unit leaders. Based on the policies of the University, the Department was established as the coordinating body for the secondary units. Wang Luning was appointed as Director of the Department; Qu Xuanhui and Lin Junpin were jointly appointed as Deputy Directors; Sun Jianlin was appointed as Deputy Director of the Department and Associate Dean of the New Materials Technology Academy; Xie Jianxin was appointed as the Director of the Academic Committee; Lv Zhaoping, Qu Xuanhui, Lin Junpin, and Wang Luning were appointed as Deputy Directors of the Academic Committee; Zhang Yue was appointed as the Director of the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee; Qu Xuanhui, Lin Junpin, and Wang Luning were appointed as Deputy Directors of the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee; Wang Luning was appointed as the Director of the Teaching Committee; and Qu Xuanhui, Cao Wenbin, Zhang Shengen, and Wu Yuan were appointed as Deputy Directors of the Teaching Committee. Thereafter, Wu Guilong, Yang Renshu, Xie Jianxin, and Wang Luning jointly unveiled the nameplate of the Department.
Wang Luning reported on the establishment of the Department from five aspects: preparation, intentions, basic information, organizational structure and functions, and the expected results. Wang projected the expectations that the Department would train high-level, innovative, and international talent to ensure the high overall quality of the faculty with the support of the various disciplinary groups; help optimize the structure of the discipline; promote the development of emerging, interdisciplinary areas; and help realize the sharing of academic information and resources and achievements; as well as ensure the Department is positioned at the center of a world-class discipline.
Xie Jianxin pointed out in his speech that the orientation of the Department lies in coordinating talent and development standards, and planning and allocating resources to facilitate the discipline’s development. He emphasized that following the establishment, the Department should pay attention to the construction of talent teams, personnel training, and scientific research. He also pointed out the existing issues in the above areas and proposed some improvement measures.
Wu Guilong affirmed the importance of the establishment of the Department for further promotion of a comprehensive reform, the construction of a “Double First Class” university and ensuring rapid high-quality development of the University. He expects the Academic Committee to ensure corresponding responsibilities are handled, facilitate coordinated development and close cooperation between the Department and other units, and integrate resources to maximize on the advantages of the Department. He also communicated that the Party Committee and administrative departments of the University should provide innovative solutions to the potential problems that might occur during the development of the Department. The establishment of the Department thus signifies an important step for the University in terms of personnel training and faculty construction and serves as a new chapter in improving the core competencies in materials science and constructing a “Double First Class” university.
